While EF is a bit less expensive and includes PDFPen OCR, PDFPen has routinely performed with less accuracy than ABBYY OCR that is included with DEVONThink Pro Office, which I use.ĮF looks like a great alternative for some people who aren't in need of some of the more complexity-inducing features in DEVONThink. However, as far as I can tell there is none of the Artificial Intelligence in EF that DT has, which has become critical to my workflow. The EF web clipper is fantastic as well.ĮF looks interesting and certainly shares some similarities with DT (Just as Evernote does). However, I have found EF to be quite a bit simpler, easy to use, with great tools. I can tell you are excited about DT, which is a nice product. EF has been a life saver for me in going completely paperless. I think you should also take a look at EagleFiler, by C-Command Software:  (Mac based only)ĮagleFiler can do all that DT and EN can do, without the cloud, with the Encryption, can upload to any cloud of your choice for mobile use, etc.

So, hopefully here we can learn more about DT, and how to strike the right balance between Evernote and DT. OTOH, Evernote offers ease of use, sync across almost all platforms, and the best web clipper, bar none. It seems that they have taken the opposite approach of Evernote, offering the user a wide array of preferences and customizations.

And even if you choose to sync it using Dropbox, DT offers the " best consumer-level security option available: zero-knowledge 256-bit encryption" Security: It is much more secure since none of the data has to be put in the Cloud.IMO, DT offers at least 3 big advantages:

But for Mac users, it offers many advantages and features in a PIM tool that we have been requesting from Evernote for years. Like ScottLougheed posted, I doubt that DT can, or will, completely replace Evernote. UPDATE: I’ve updated the Automator Service to add the URL for the Mail message to the DEVONthink Pro record so you can get back to the email message that had the attachment. Until then, OmniFocus and DEVONthink Pro with AppleScript come pretty close. 🙂 I’m still holding out for the super automated task manager. That pretty much settled it for me – at least for this month. So you should be able to edit it to your needs. The Automator Service uses a Run AppleScript Action for the bulk of the work. It will also snag the email text and include that as a comment on the document record in DEVONthink. So I created this Automater Service (works on Snow Leopard, not sure about anything earlier) to grab the attachments from an email and create new records in the DEVONthink Inbox. The problem is when I have a document that I need to store as part of a project in DEVONthink. I can use the OmniFocus clipping service and a new task is created with an attachments and the email text. One other thing I needed to adjust is that I get a lot of information via email.

So I wrote this script that will create an OmniFocus task in the Inbox from a document record. After I scan the document, I need to create a task in OmniFocus to ensure that I don’t forget what I was supposed to do with that document.

My workflow involves scanning documents into DEVONthink since it does optical character recognition, making the resulting PDF searchable. There’s another script to archive the project out of OmniFocus and into DEVONthink when its done. Another creates an OmniOutliner file in the DEVONthink project as a notes document. One script will create a matching project in DEVONthink for the project in OmniFocus. He’s written some very nice AppleScripts to facilitate the workflow between these two apps. As Rob puts it, verbs are maintained in OmniFocus and nouns are kept in DEVONthink Pro.

Then I ran across a brilliant workflow by Rob Trew on the Devon Technologies Forums. To complete the picture, I started comparing all of my information managers – Yojimbo, Evernote, DevonThink Pro and even the good old OS X Finder. OmniFocus is my key app since that’s where I keep all my tasks. I’ve just spent the weekend tweaking my workflow to deal with the over abundance of information that my job generates.
